2025 Akron Open Dubs Results!

Who would win the 20th rendition of the Akron Open Championships? Hint: One of these 3.0 stars!
Who would win the 20th rendition of the Akron Open Championships? Hint: One of these 3.0 stars!

It's a self-rated sweep as Dan and Ron enter Akron Open history with their first ever 3.0 title!

It may have been one of the lowest attended doubles championships in years (but better than 2019's zero!), but that didn't mean the 20th anniversary of the granddaddy of all 3.0 tournaments didn't have some high 3.0 drama!

A one-and-done, first to 8 games round-robin Gangham Style format would ensure that all four teams would play one another for the ultimate in 3.0 glory!

Participants

Eric and Tavi ... played together during league play and finished runner-up at the Towpath Tournament in January looked to be the odds on favorites!

Renier and Dave, John and Sean... four players, all from Towpath, knew these courts inside and out (mostly inside, as that's where the tournament would take place). Not only that but all four of these participants had played with one another during the league season!

Ron and Dan ... two self-rated newbies, they'd never played organized USTA before. And as this is 3.0, this means they were immediately the favorites!

The Draw

As it turned out, the key match of the evening was the first match of the evening, as tournament veterans Eric and Tavi took on self-rated newbies Ron and Dan. In a back and forth, to and fro, match, this one simply couldn't be decided in regular time and indeed, it would take BONUS TENNIS to decide who would start 1-0 to start the 20th rendition of the Akron Open Championships! Perhaps not realizing the gravity of the moment, newbies Ron and Dan, unburdened by the moment, played loose and free, and thanks to their free and loose play, won the tiebreak and thus the opening match in nail bitingly close fashion!

Eric and Tavi bounced back, only losing two games over the course of their next two matches, but now the 3.0 tennis ball was in the 3.0 tennis court of Ron and Dan, and despite a noble attempt from Sean and John, all that stood in their way were Towpath's very own Renier and Dave! And despite tournament vet Renier getting out to a fast start, it would be the newbies who, with their youth and exuberance, would win the match and thus the day (or evening, as this took place at night)!

Congratulations to all the participants on a glorious Akron Open and etching their places in 3.0 history!
